Timber species:
The eastern half is mostly maple, the top is maple mixed with balsam, white birch, aspen, and a few oak trees.
Wildlife:
Deer, bear, wolves, porcupines, grouse, lots of chipmunks, red (no gray) squirrels, martin, mink, and otter and more have been seen on this property.
Directions:
From Duluth Minnesota go north east on Highway 61 to Little Marais approximately 60 miles. Then go northward on County Road 6 towards Finland Minnesota approximately 2.9 miles to the first (there are two, close together) gravel pit on the right, the road in crosses this county land and exits the at the north east corner of the gravel pit area. Follow this for around one mile (heading back towards Lake Superior) until you reach the bottom of the valley, then take the left, across the valley and travel up until the road ends then walk north a few hundred feet(?) and you begin your journey onto this paradise property. You should contact the Realtor and inquire about a personal guided tour!
Other features:
This property is located on a hawk migration route! The Superior Hiking trail is about 1/4 mile west through the woods (PDF Map showing this trail). Hint for this map: follow Hwy 6 from Little Marais and compare to topo's and/or Google Earth.
This location appears to hold excellent potential for both solar and wind energy generation due to being ridge top property and most of it is south to south eastern exposure. This is located on one of the tops of the sawtooth mountain range. Access across the property marked as sold on one of the topo's, comes with this property.
Panoramic views should be easily obtainable with some selective cutting. Not only can you see across Lake Superior into Wisconsin, but also up along the shore, excellent view potential of the Sawtooth Range towards Grand Marais, and Northwards is mile after mile of forest towards the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Contact information: Lake Superior Realty website or call 218-353-7623 for Realtor Tim Melby and ask about a guided tour of this 'rare find' real estate! Once this is sold we dont think you'll see another piece of land like this available for a long long time to come.
Terms:
$475,000.00 USD Cash, or Contract for Deed with 10% down over 10 years at 10% interest.
Google earth to this location!
* This is a new feature on this site. I tried this in Internet Explorer it says it is a zip file and asks if I want to open it, I clicked on yes, then it shows a folder with the .kmz file, clicked on it (the file) and it opened Google Earth and took me to the location.
In FireFox it asked "What should Firefox do with this file?" with a radio button selected to 'Open with' [Google Earth (default)] then I clicked on "Ok" it then opened Google Earth and again, took me to the location.
If you play around with it and zoom and tilt (top slide bar above compass) then spin the compass N possition, you can get some idea what the view from this property is like, but as you can see from the photos, its not the same as actually being there.
You can go here to get free Google Earth download.
Notes from owner:
On the topographic maps I did my best to draw the property lines but they should only be use as approximate and for display purposes only. Phone and power (I believe) are at the bottom of the valley on the way in but I used cell phone and made my own power using wind and solar while I lived on the northern part of the sold property so I didn't need them, I do not know the costs for completing the road to the top, nor for running the power and phone to the top if you wished. You may want to check on these items with the Realtor, power and phone companies, and someone who does road construction, if you want them run the rest of the way up to the property.
Best when viewed on a partly cloudy day it seems to add an extra dimension to things especially when the clouds are close enough you can almost touch the bottoms of them.
Its BREATHTAKING and seems to change every 15 minutes as well as day to day, never seems the same. In winter I've watched spiral towers of steam come up from the lake to the clouds above them and when frozen over and a wind breaks up the ice and the sun shines, its like looking at an ocean of sparkling diamonds.
This is a VERY beautiful location were most of my visitors first words to describe it would spontaneously call it "paradise". (Though raising white racing homers may have had an influence on that statement watching them fly, quite often below the elevation we were standing.)
I do not want to sell this property but feel compelled to after leaving the state and wish to recover from the relocation and change of life and lifestyle (I am currently living in a small town and - REALLY REALLY want to get some remote property again! - I've been to spoiled by those years of peace and quite!).
This property, I dearly love and found much peace and tranquility living next to (the part on the topo that says sold) for many many years. I currently reside in Alaska yet still find it hard to find any place as beautiful as this land - I have been truly spoiled by its majestic beauty and breathtaking views.
I've done my best to describe this property, but its hard to put into words what is best experienced. If not for having to relocate for my children, I would still be there and even several years later, I still dearly and deeply miss this place!
I know I should be asking more for this property due to the property values in this area and what this land really is, but after living at the end of the gravel road with a 24 hour singing sky (whipper wills, jays, owls, chickadees....) and now living near a road with semi-trucks driving close by 24/7... I've priced this for a quick sell, before I change my mind (crazy enough to sell at this price - because of the traffic where I am now??).
So I am firm on this price. I will accept cash or Contract for Deed with 10% down and balance at 10 years at 10% interest.
If interested I should suggest you act fast before I come to my senses and change my mind (again? I have listed this a couple of times over the last several years only to take it off of the market for years, again) and decide to keep this paradise.
I've been the sole owner for around 20 years. And this is NOT easy for me to part with! So if this listing is gone soon and not displayed as sold, you'll know why!
Descriptive text for images:
Image 1. This is from the property facing east. For those who have images turned off in their browsers, the image is of a view towards lake superior (in the background with the shadow of an overhead cloud on the lake not seen in the photo). In the middle of the photo is a small clearing that is left from logging equipment which was used to remove some trees from the top area of the property, both sides of this logging road are showing maple trees in late fall color.
The area logged is only a few acres which last time I was there had some cattails growing and puddles of water where the logging truck tracks were, I am not sure but I think this is due to a small spring which comes up near the surface because at the time I saw this it had not rained in some time and the water did not look to be very stagnate.
I did not have enough time spent in that area to hunt around and find the source 'if' it is a small spring. But the soil in that area is rich black soil and I dont know how far down it goes but I was giving serious thought to putting a garden in that location and part of why I had that spot logged off.
Image 2. This is an image of the view from the property facing South. It shows maple trees in late fall colors and an opening in the trees where you can see in the distance a ridge with a cliff face facing north towards the viewer. The ridge seen in the distance in the photograph image is very near to Wolf Ridge Enviornmental Learning Center. I can also be seen if a person views this in Google Earth but this is an actual photograph. Which can also help the viewer to understand that what is seen in Google earth may be of lower detail than the photograph image. And my personal opinion is that the same would hold true of the difference of looking at these images verses visiting the site itself may hold for the observer.
